In loving memory of JOHN SMYTH for many years  famer in Birgham who died 22nd May 1940 aged 83 years. Also ELIZABETH JANE wife of the above who died10th April 1941 aged 69 years. Also there son F/O JOHN SCOTT SMYTH R.A.F.V.R. killed in action over Germany 16th September 1942 interred at Kerfeld aged 37 years. And their daughter JEANIE SMYTH who died 6th January 1953 aged 46 years

Military record

Pilot Officer John Scott Smyth, ( Navigator ) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed in action over Germany with 158 Squadron R.A.F. on 17th September 1942, aged 37 and is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany. His father , John Smyth, was a farmer in Birgham for many years. 158 Squadron flew the Handley Page Halifax B Mk11 fron R.A.F. East Moor, North Yorkshire and lost 900 aircrew during the War.

Commentary

There is more than a little doubt as where John Scott Smyth is buried as his head stone says Kerfeld and the Commonwealth  War Graves say Reichswald Forrest War Cemetary Kleve.
