Private William Herkes.

Private William Herkes 1st/4th ( Border) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli, aged 30, He was the son of on 12th July 1915 during the “Charge” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah. He was the son of Robert and Eliza Herkes of Ednam then Sucklawridge, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. Before enlisting he had been employed as a ploughman at Newtonlees, Ednam. ( Whilst he is commemorated on the Ednam Memorial and not on the Coldstream Memorial we feel that as he was born in Coldstream he should be part of the Coldstream War Memorial section and thus we have included him here ).
