Private John Campbell Bell, 7th ( British Columbia) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He died from shrapnel wounds in the 1st Canadian General Hospital in France on 18th April 1917 aged 25. He had been born in Hawick and was the son of Adam and the late Rhoda Bell of Faldonside, Melrose and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. He had been in Canada for three years working as a teamster before enlisting in Calgary. His headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man Than This That A Man Lay Down His Life For His Friends”.
