Fitter Staff Sergeant James Redpath Hall, “D” Battery, 125th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died in France on Active service, aged 24, on the 7th February 1916 as the result of an accident. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of James and Mary Hall of High Buckholmside, Galashiels and 119 Easter Road, Edinburgh. He landed in France with his Battery as part of the 37th Division in July 1915 and he is buried in Foncquevillers, Military Cemetery, Somme, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” His Country Called He Answered”. The R.F.A. used the 18 pounder field gun with both high explosive and shrapnel shells.
