Commentary
BERWICKSHIRE NEWS , 16 June 1908
A telegram from Tokio states that Colonel Henry Martin, chief of the Royal Army Medical Corps in Hong Kong, was drowned in Lake Chuzenji near Nikko, while fishing on Friday. Colonel Martin was a son of the late Archdeacon Martin of Lindisfarne, and had many friends in North Northumberland. He acted for many years on the staff of both Lord Harris and Lord Sandhurst at Bombay. He served throughout the Boer War, went through the siege of Ladysmith, and was three times mentioned in dispatches. He left for Hong Kong last October to take up a position on the staff there, and this sad accident has occurred whilst visiting Japan on leave.
