Private William Henderson

Private William Atkinson Henderson, 19th ( Service ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died in France on 27th November 1916 from wounds aged 26. He was the only son of Isabella and the late James Henderson of the Temperance Hotel, Wooler and the husband of Ann Mary Henderson. He is buried in Faubourg D’ Amiens cemetery, Arras, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Peace Perfect Peace “. Before enlisting in October 1915 he had been an enthusiastic member of the Cheviot Street Church choir as well as the Brotherhood choir. Wooler Football Club were fortunate in having him as their secretary. He was wounded in the trenches by a Trench Mortar bomb and his last words were ” Carry on the Northumberlands “.  This Unit was designated as a Pioneer Battalion to the 35th Division.
