Corporal William Herbert Malcolm Elliot, 3rd Battalion, Wellington Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 30, on the 3rd October 1917 during the Battle of Third Ypres. He was the son of John and Mary Elliot of 3 St. Ninian’s Terrace, Wooler and is buried in Brandhoek new Military Cemetery No. 3, Flanders, Belgium. The photos try to show the atrocious conditions that the troops had to fight in. The incessant shelling had destroyed the Flanders fragile drainage systems and the autumnal rains had flooded the ground.
