Private Thomas Smart

Private Thomas Smart, 11th ( Service ) Battalion, Essex Regiment. He died in France on 6th October 1915 of wounds received in action during the Battle of Loos aged 24. He was the son of John and Susan Smart of Wooler and is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France. Before enlisting in September 1914 he had worked as a plasterer in Wooler. The photograph shows the village of Loos after capture and the artist’s nighmarish illustration depicts an attack at Loos with the troops wearing their gas hoods and using primitive grenades. His Headstone is inscribed ” His Life For His Country, His Soul To God, His Name Liveth For Evermore “.
