Lance Corporal Thomas Gordon

Lance Corporal Thomas Johnston Gordon, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 3rd May 1917 during the Battle of Arras, aged 29 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Gordon of Bender, Wooler and the husband of Jean Gordon of 44 Gilmour Place, Edinburgh. He was a Molecatcher to trade and had enlisted in April 1915 before being wounded in September 1916. He fell in the 3rd Division attack on a 12 mile front from Arleux to Bullecourt. The attack succeeded on the flanks but failed in the centre. 1st R.S.F. , in the centre, attacked near Monchy with an inadequate artillery barrage and against strong defences on “Infantry Hill”. Thus casualties were heavy. 6 Officers and 27 Other Ranks were killed and 3 Officers and 212 Other Ranks were wounded. In addition 2 Officers and 57 Other Ranks were posted missing.
