Lance Corporal Richard Leach

Lance Corporal Richard Ernest Leach, 26th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 4th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, Somme, France. Before enlisting He had been born in the Schoolhouse, Wooler.  In the autumn rains the shell blasted chalky soils of the Region this ground turned into a glutinous quagmire making movement difficult as can be seen from the photographs. The colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
