Second Lieutenant John Winton

Second Lieutenant John Hubert Winton, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 7th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, aged 18. He was the son of John and Maria Winton of 13 King Street, Ramsgate, formerly of Wooler and is buried in Ovillers Military Cemetery, Somme, France. He had been born in Wooler and fell leading his men in an assault in the fierce fighting at Ovillers near Albert. He had enlisted, aged 16, as a Private, been swiftly promoted to Sergeant and then commissioned. He had taken part in the Battle of Loos in September and October 1915.
