Lance Corporal John Hall

Lance Corporal John Hall, 18th Battalion,( 1st Tyneside Pioneers ), Northumberland Fusiliers. He died in France on 29th June 1916 of wounds received in action, aged 25. This was two days before the opening of the Battle of the Somme. He had enlisted in October 1914 and left a wife and a child. He was a keen footballer and played for Wooler F.C. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Hall of Wooler and the husband of Frances Mary Hall of 447 Shield’s Road, Heaton, Newcastle-on-Tyne. His father was a painter in the town. He is buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. ( The Berwickshire Advertiser has his rank as Corporal ). Before enlisting in October 1914 he had been employed as a plasterer.
