Private James Maclagan

Private James Maclagan, 11th ( Service ) Battalion, Border Regiment. He died on 19th November 1916 in France of wounds received in action during the Battle of the Somme aged 21. He was the son of Thomas Maclagan of Warwick Bridge, Carlisle and the husband of Mary Jane Maclagan.  He is buried in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France. This “Pals” unit was known as the ” Lonsdale ” Battalion being formed in September 1914 by Lord Lonsdale with its H.Q. in Penrith. By late October the autumn rains had turned the shell blasted battlefield into a glutinous quagmire making all movement difficult as can be seen in the photographs. ( The association with Wooler is not evident).
