Private James Aitchison

Private James Aitchison, Gordon Highlanders. He died in France on 23rd of March 1918 of wounds received in action during the German Spring Offensive ( Operation Michael ) which had begun on the 21st March. He was the son of Mrs Aitchison of Lilburn Steads and before the War he had worked for the Hedgley Co-oP as a counterman and traveller. He had enlisted in November 1915 and had been wounded in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. It is believed he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. The photographs show Allied troops preparing to resist the advancing Germans.
