Gunner George Gagie

Gunner George Gagie, Royal Field Artillery. ( The C.W.G.C. site gives his unit as 142nd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery ). He died during the Spanish Flu Epidemic in France on 15th November 1918 four days after the War ended and is buried in Auberchicourt British Cemetery, Douai, France.  He had been born in South Shields and was the son of George and Margaret Gagie and appears to have been employed as a farm labourer in the Wooler area. The Field Artillery used the 18 pounder field gun in an anti infantry role using high explosive and shrapnel shells. The photograph shows one of the shrapnel shells.
