Sergeant David Taylor

Sergeant David Taylor, “C” Coy. 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry. He was killed in action by shell fire in Belgium on 21st March 1918 on the first day of the German Spring Offensive ( Operation Michael ), aged 29. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Taylor of Newham Hall, Chathill, Northumberland and is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Hooge, Flanders, Belgium. Before enlisting he had worked as a shepherd with Mr Stanners of Ewart He had arrived in France in September 1915 just in time to take part in the Battle of Loos where he was wounded. His Headstone is inscribed ” For His Country’s Sake His Life He Gave, Fondly Remembered By Father Mother Sisters And Brothers “.
