Gunner William Donaldson

Gunner William Donaldson  1st/1st Lowland Heavy Battery ,Royal Garrison Artillery.  He died of wounds on 30th March 1918 aged 25 suffered during the German Spring Offensives. He had been born in Westruther and was the son of Alexander and Isabella Donaldson of Spottiswoode ,Westruther. Whilst the rest of the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division went to Gallipoli its heavy battery remained in Scotland for further training. It then went to France in February 1916. He is buried in Faubourg D Amiens Cemetery Arras, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” I Shall Be Satisfied When I Awake With Thy Likeness”. The R.G.A. heavy batteries used the 60 pounder gun on long range targets and are shown below. ( His brother Robert also fell – see below ).
