Lieutenant John Little M.C.

Lieutenant John ( Jock ) Little, M.C. 90th Field Company, Royal Engineers. He died from wounds in Belgium on 17th October 1918 aged 21 during the ” Advance to Victory “. He had been born in Droitwich, Worcs. and was the son of John and Agnes Little of Hawkslaw, Coldstream and is buried in Cement House Cemetery which is near Langemarck ,Flanders, Belgium. His Headstone is inscribed ” Death is swallowed up in Victory “. He had been educated at Wellington College, Berks. and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich being commissioned from there in February 1915. He won his Military Cross on the day before he died. The citation reads ” On 16th October he was detailed to make a reconnaissance of a river crossing in the vicinity of Harlebeke. Despite machine gun fire and sniping he got to a very exposed position during daylight and brought back very valuable information. He did splendid work throughout operations and by his marked courage and keenness set a very fine example to his men”.
