Lance Corporal John Ford

Lance Corporal John Baxter Ford , 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed by a sniper at Gallipoli, aged 21, on 24th June 1915. He was the first of the Coldstream Territorials to fall. He was the brother of the above James Ford and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been born in Coldstream and was the son of Thomas and Marion Ford of Duns Road, Coldstream. He had been a Member of  “E” Coy, Territorial 4th  K.O.S.B. and was mobilised with his Battalion going to Gallipoli in June 1915. His Company Commander Captain Wallace from Coldstream wrote to his father telling him of the sad event.. (Capt. Wallace was to fall  himself in the ” Charge” on 12th July). His brother James had already fallen in France with the Seaforth Highlanders on 9th May 1915 during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. The Battalion was part of the 155th ( South Scottish ) Brigade in the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division.
