Captain John Ferguson

Captain John Ferguson, Royal Naval Reserve. He was lost at sea, aged 65, on the 29th October 1917 and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. He had been born in Coldstream and was the son of the late Andrew and Janet Ferguson of Coldstream and was the husband of the late Margaret Oliphant Ferguson. He was employed as a Pilot by the Cinque Ports Pilot Lighthouse and Pilotage Authorities. and was piloting the Norwegian cargo ship ” Ren” as she sailed from France to Tyneside to take on coal. The ship went missing with all hands, presumed mined, and the wreck lies off the coast of Lowestoft, Suffolk. He is also commemorated on the Cinque Ports Pilots Memorial, in St Mary’s Church, Dover.
