Second Lieutenant Archibald Carmichael

Second Lieutenant Archibald Carmichael “D” Battery ,108th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died from wounds in the 61st Casualty Clearing Station, aged 26, in France on 22nd May 1918 . He is buried in Vignacourt British Cemetery., Vignacourt, France. He had been born in Coldstream and was the son of Provost Robert Carmichael and Euphemia bell Dickman of “Rosybank” House, Tweed Road, Coldstream. Before transferring to the R.F.A. he was with the Lothians and Border Horse since 1912. He was mobilised in August 1914 and had served in France and Salonica. He had returned home in July 1917 and was commissioned into the R.F.A. in February 1918. He had been back to France for only four weeks. Before the war he had been associated with his father in the firm of R. Carmichael and Sons who were Grocers and Seed Merchants in the town. His brother George was killed in action in August 1918. ( See above for fuller details ). His headstone is inscribed ” Till the Day break”. The Field Artillery normally used the 18 pounder field gun in an anti infantry role using high explosive and shrapnel shells one of which is shown below.
