Private Alexander Carmichael

Private Alexander Carmichael , 6th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders He was killed in action in France during the Battle of the Somme on 24th August 1916 ,aged 24. He had been born in Coldstream and  was the son of Jane and the late George Carmichael  of  ” Iolair” ( Eaglesheugh ) Victoria Place, Coldstream and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial ,Thiepval, Somme, France. Before enlisting he had been employed by the British Linen Bank in George Street, Edinburgh. The photograph show Scottish troops on the Somme and the colour photo shows part of the peaceful Somme today with its open gently rolling landscape with “no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now” .
