Private Walter Harriot Halliday

Private Walter Harriot Halliday, 53rd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps ( Infantry ). He was killed in action in Belgium on 22nd October 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres, aged 30, and is buried in the Cement House Cemetery, Langemark, Flanders ,Belgium.  He had been born in Swinton, Berwickshire and was the son of Robert and Margaret Halliday and husband of the late Isabella Renwick Halliday formerly of Swinton Quarter. Before enlisting in The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in November 1914 he had been employed as an under gamekeeper at Clifton Park.  In France he was transferred to the M.G.C. The M.G.C used the Vickers Mk1 water cooled machine gun in both defensive and offensive roles.  The photograph shows machine gunners in position amid the desolation of the Flanders battlefield. His Headstone is inscribed “God Is Love”.
