Private William Leiper

Private William T. Leiper, 13th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in France on 4th September 1916, aged 19, during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of Elizabeth Leiper of 17 Kiln Hill, Tweedmouth and is buried in Ardanac Military Cemetery, Miramont, Somme, France.  The autumn rains together with the incessant shelling soon turned the chalky ground of the Region into a glutinous quagmire making all movement very difficult as the photographs show.
