Able Seaman Thomas Wood

Able Seaman Thomas Burn Wood, Royal Navy. He was killed in action at sea aboard his ship, H.M.S. “Grenville” on 4th October 1943, aged 30. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Wood and the husband of Mary Jameson Wood. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. “Grenville” was a “U” Class Destroyer  ordered as part of the Emergency War  programme and was launched at Swan Hunters on 12th October 1942 being commissioned in May 1943. In September and October 1943 the ship was part of ” Operation Tunnel ” which involved searching for blockade runners along the French coast. On 4th October she took part in an action against enemy destroyers and suffered  a small number of casualties including A.B. Wood who was buried at sea. The destroyer survived the War and was finally scrapped in 1983.
