Private Richard King

Private Richard King, 15th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He died in a Casualty Clearing Station in Belgium  on 25th April 1918, aged 26, of wounds received in action during the German Spring Offensive on the River Lys. He was the husband of Peterina King of 7, Parliament Close, Tweedmouth and is buried in Lijssenhoel Military Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium. He was wounded by a shell whilst he was helping to dig a trench during what was called the Battle of the Lys. He was a native of Bo’Ness, West Lothian and had trained in Dunbar and Berwick where he was a Dispatch Rider. ( The Berwickshire Advertiser has his rank as Lance Corporal ). His Headstone is inscribed ” Until The Day Dawns And The Shadows Flee Away”. The photos show British troops behind makeshift defences awaiting further German advances.
