Rifleman John Straffen

Rifleman John Straffen, 19th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in actrion in France on 15th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He fell in the fierce fighting at Flers and Gueudecourt where the first use of Tanks helped the attacking troops gain their Objectives. The photograph shows a “Male” tank which was armed with two cannons as opposed to a ” Female ” which was armed with machine guns only. The other photos show British troops on the Somme.
