Sergeant John Cleghorn

Sergeant John Cleghorn, 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 16th August 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres, aged 24. He was the husband of Margaret Shaw ( formerly Cleghorn ) of Low Greens, Berwick-upon-Tweed and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He had been a Regular soldier and had served 6 years with the Colours in India and at Gallipoli and had already been wounded in France in 1915. Before enlisting he had been employed as a carter with Messrs. Gray, builders of Berwick. The photos show troops during the early stages of the Battle.
