Private Gilbert Burton

Private Gilbert Burton, 16th ( Canadian Scottish ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed by shellfire in Belgium on 13th June 1916, aged 26. He was the son of John and Jane Burton of 43 Main Road, Tweedmouth and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. Before emigrating to Canada he had been employed as a joiner at Tweedmouth sawmill and had been a keen member of the Berwick Harriers. He fell in the fierce fighting around Mount Sorrel near Sanctuary Wood, Flanders which cost the Canadian Corps around 5000 casualties. The photo shows part of the battlefield after the fighting.
