Gunner Adam Pringle

Gunner Adam Pringle, ” A ” Battery, 8th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action in Belgium on 22nd September 1917, aged 23 during the Battle of Third Ypres. He had been born in Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire and was the son of Nellie P. Carruthers of Phaup, Teviothead and Hillhead, Drinkstone, Hawick. Before enlisting he had been employed as a shepherd at Binks, Teviothead. He is buried in Pond Farm Cemetery, Wulvergem, Flanders, Belgium. The Royal Field Artillery normally used the 18 pounder gun in an anti infantry role using both high explosive and shrapnel shells one of which is shown below. By Autumn the ground conditions were deteriorating rapidly with the incessant shelling having destroyed the fragile Flanders drainage systems as can be seen in the photographs.
