Shoeing Smith Corporal W. Landels

Shoeing Smith Corporal W. Y. Landels, 33rd Reserve Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He died in hospital on 5th April 1917, aged 29  He was the son of George and Annie Landels of Springwood Park, Kelso and is buried in Swinton Parish Churchyard. He had been brought up by his aunt Mrs Forrest and served an apprenticeship as a blacksmith with Mr John Briggs of Swinton. Later he set up his own business and on the outbreak of War he joined the Lothian and Border Horse as a Shoeing Smith before transferring to the R.F.A. He was stationed in Glasgow where he was rushed to 3rd General Hospital at Stobhill with a perforated ulcer where he died the following day. His body was returned to Swinton for burial in the Kirkyard.
