Gunner Daniel Mckenzie

Gunner Daniel Stewart Mckenzie, 109th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. He died in France on 30th August 1916, aged 34, from wounds received during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Dernacourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. He was born in Campbelltown in 1882 and worked as a carter before volunteering to serve in the Anglo Boer War where he served with Fincastle’s Horse. After this War he married and moved to Chirnside where he worked in the Papermill as a Fireman. In 1914 he travelled to Edinburgh and joined the Royal Field Artillery. He was wounded on 28th August and died in a Casualty Clearing Station two days later. At that time his wife and four children were living with her father in Simprim. The R.F.A. main artillery piece was the 18 pounder gun which was normally used in an anti infantry role using high explosive and shrapnel shells one of which is shown below.
