Gunner Alexander Ross

Gunner Alexander Ross, 10th Mountain Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He died of malaria in Palestine on 21st October 1918, aged 23. He had been born in Swinton and was the son of Alexander and Sophia Ross of Swinton and is buried in Haifa War Cemetery, Palestine. In Palestine his Unit had been involved in action against the Turks at Gaza, Jerusalem and Jericho. He had two brothers serving, Peter who was with the K.O.S.B. in France and James who was an Air Mechanic in England. His Headstone is Inscribed” Till The Day Break And The Shadows Flee Away”. The Battery used the 3.7 inch howitzer.
