Private Thomas Graham

Private Thomas Graham, 1st Battalion, Black Watch. He was killed in action in France on 26th September 1915 during the Battle of Loos, aged 30. He had been born in Maxton and was the son of John and Margaret Graham of Swinton and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. He was well known in Swinton where he worked as a roadman for the Council and left a widow, Jane Tait Graham and five children. The Battalion’s main assault had taken place on the 25th September against strong German defences in the Hohenzollern Redoubt area. 4 Officers and 60 Other Ranks were killed and 6 Officers and 151 Other Ranks were wounded. In addition 61 Other Ranks were posted missing. The first photograph shows the village of Loos after capture with the second showing shells bursting on the Redoubt. The  artist’s illustration depicts the Battalion’s attack led by its pipers.
