Gunner William Walker

Probably Gunner William Walker, 36th Division Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in Belgium, aged 27, on 5th October 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory” and is buried in Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery in Belgium. He had been born in Stow and was the son of the late James and Isabella Walker of Stow. Before enlisting in January 1915 he had been employed by a grocer and wine merchant in St Boswells. He had originally enlisted in the Army Veterinary Corps but was transferred to the R.A. at some point. He was killed whilst delivering ammunition to the front linbe.The Field Artillery used the 18 pounder field gun in an anti infantry role using both high explosive and shrapnel shells and one of the shrapnel shells is shown below.
