Private Robert Todd

Private Robert Todd, 1st/5th ( Dumfries and Galloway ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Palestine on 13th November 1917, aged 22. He had been born in Liberton, Edinburgh and  was the son of Robert and Jessie Todd of Burnhouse, Stow and Corsehope, Heriot, Midlothian and is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.  Before enlisting in June 1915 he had been a ploughman at Borderhouse Mains and joined the 1st Battalion, K.O.S.B. at Gallipoli the Egypt before moving to France. Here he was wounded and upon recovery he was posted to the 1st/5th Battalion in Palestine. He fell in the successful assault and capture of the village of El Mughar where 1,000 Turks were captured along with much war material. The Battalion lost 3 Officers and 20 Other Ranks killed and 110 Other Ranks wounded. The photographs show Borderers at Ramleh in late 1917.
