Private Robert Crombie

Private Robert Gilbert Crombie, 5th/6th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles ). He was killed in action in France, aged 27, on 20th May 1917 just after the end of the Battle of Arras and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France.  He had been born  in Edinburgh and was the son of William and Jessie Crombie of Sunnybank, Stow. He and his father ran the Waverley Poultry Farm at Stow and he had originally enlisted in the Royal Scots before being transferred to the Cameronians.  The photo shows troops and a tank in a captured village near Arras.
