Lance Corporal Robert Affleck

Lance Corporal Robert Affleck, 1st Battalion, Tank Corps. He was killed in action in France on the 8th August 1918, aged 25, during the Battle of Amiens. He had been born in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire and was the son of James and Maggie Affleck and the grandson of George Young of Symington, Stow. He is buried in Bouchoir new British Cemetery, France. He had been employed as a ploughman when he enlisted in the Motor Machine Gun section of the Royal Field Artillery in May 1915. This Unit eventually morphed into the Tank Corps. The Battle of Amiens began with a break through by over 400 tanks and heralded the start on the final 100 days of the War. The photos show Allied troops in pursuit of the retreating German Army.
