Private James Doig

Private James Henderson Doig, 43rd ( Cameron Highlanders of Canada ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He died on 2nd February 1917, aged 33, and is buried in the Ecoivres Military Cemetary, Mont St.Eloi, France. He had been born in Stow and was the son of William and Jane Doig, Kirkclaugh, Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Kirkcubrightshire. Before enlisting in November 1915 he had been employed as a carpenter in Winnipeg.  His Headstone is inscribed ” But From The Ground There Blossoms Red Life That Shall Endless Be”. Previously he had served as a Regular with the Royal Scots and the K.O.S.B. before emigrating to Canada where he had served in the local Militia, the Cameron Highlanders of Canada.
