Carpenter Charles Clark

Carpenter Charles Anderson Clark, Merchant Navy.  He was lost at sea aboard the S.S. ” River Lugar ” on 26th June 1941, aged 45.  He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. He had been born in Leith and was the son of Charles and Agnes Christie of Galashiels and the husband of Jane Clark of Earlston Road, Stow The ship was in convoy from Freetown to Barry Roads, Wales when it was torpedoed and sunk by U-69 200 miles south of the Azores. She broke in two  and sank in seconds. From her complement of 46 there were only 6 survivors. The ship was a general merchantman of 5,500 tons and had been built in 1937 by Lithgows Ltd. of Port Glasgow. On her last trip she had been carrying a cargo of 9,000 tons of iron ore which probably accounted for her sinking so quickly. (U-69 herself was destroyed with all hands on 17th February 1943 when she was rammed and sunk by the destroyer H.M.S. “Fame”).
