Private Thomas Oliver

Private Thomas Richardson Oliver, 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards. He was killed in action in France on 5th October 1915 during the Battle of Loos, aged 19. He was the son of Jane and the late William Oliver of Winnington Rig, Stobs, Hawick and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. At that time his two brothers were serving, Douglas in the Army Service Corps and Robert in the Gordon Highlanders. The photograph shows Loos village after capture. ( At the time of his death the Battalion were in front line trenches near the Hoenzollern Redoubt and the photo shows shells bursting on the German trenches in that sector).
