Private Andrew Currie

Private Andrew Currie, 31st ( Alberta) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium on 6th November 1917, aged 24 during the Battle of Third Ypres. He was the son of George and Mary Currie of Greenbraeheads, Hawick and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. Before enlisting he had been farming at Calgary, Alberta and had joined the Battalion in France in August 1916. He had been wounded on the Somme in 1916 and returned to the front in 1917. The photos show the desolate state of the Flanders battlefield where the drainage systems had been shattered by the incessant shelling.
