Private John Brown

Private John Brown, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in hospital on 25th September 1919, aged 33. He had been wounded in the spine in France and had been sent back to Craigleith Hospital in Edinburgh where he died. He was the son of John and Mary Brown of Borthwick, Midlothian and the husband of Ellen Boyd Brown of Paton’s Buildings, St Boswells. Before enlisting he had been employed as a grocer’s vanman. He is buried in St Boswells Parish Churchyard where his headstone is inscribed ” He Giveth His Beloved Sleep”.
