Rifleman George Wilson

Rifleman George Brown Wilson, 2nd/8th Battalion, London Regiment ( Post Office Rifles ). He was killed in action in Belgium on 20th September 1917, aged 35, during the Battle of Third Ypres. He was the son of the late James and Abigail Wilson and the husband of Mary Gray Wilson of Bonny View, St Boswells. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. He had been working as a postman in Selkirk when he enlisted.  He fell in the attack on ” Wurst Farm” Ridge which was successful but cost the Battalion 50% casualties. The photos show the desolate nature of the Flanders battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the fragile drainage systems.
