Private David Marshall

Private David Marshall, ( Possibly)  143rd Coy., Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 27, on 23rd August 1917 during the Battle of Third Ypres. He had been born in Dumbartonshire and was the son of Agnes and the late David Marshall and the stepson of William Campbell of Stirlingshire.  He had been employed as a gardener when he enlisted in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers Reserve Battalion. He had then re-enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps in May 1916. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. The M.G.C. used the Vickers Mk1  water cooled machine gun  in both defensive and offensive roles. The photographs show gunners in action.
