Corporal Robert Darling

Corporal Robert Darling, 20th Battalion ( 1st Tyneside Scottish ), Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 27th April 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is buried in Roeux British Cemetery, Roeux, Arras, France. He fell in the fighting which defeated a German counter attack on the British front line trenches. He was the husband of Jessie Dryden and the son-in-law of Joseph Dryden of Pit Cottages, Ord Moor. He had originally joined the Northern Cyclists in October 1914 and later transferred into the Tyneside Scottish. The photographs show British troops with a tank in the main street of a captured village near Arras.
