Sergeant William Johnston

Sergeant William Johnston, 3rd Battalion ,Coldstream Guards. He was killed in action in Flanders during the Third Battle of Ypres in the attack on the Houthulst Forest line  on 9th October 1917, aged 25. He was the brother of Wellwood Johnston above and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He had been a member of the Metropolitan Police before the war and is also commemorated on the Coldstream War Memorial as is his brother. The photographs show the desolation of the Flanders battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the drainage systems.
