Private David Jamieson

Private David Jamieson, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 12th July 1915, aged 31, during the ” Charge ” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been born in Gordon and was the son of the late John and Alison Jamieson. His legatee was Janet Cairns whose father was the Estate joiner at Polwarth. That day became known as the “Black Day of the Borders” as nearly every Border town and village had lost at least one of their sons. Out of over 700 attackers only 70 unwounded men answered roll call that evening. Both the Colonel and his adjutant were killed along with another 360 Officers and men. The first photo shows Achi Baba, the objective, marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the battlefield and was never captured. The second shows the Borderers attacking at Gallipoli and the third shows the battlefield in 1922
