Craftsman Joseph Lowrie

Craftsman Joseph Lowrie, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He died of wounds on 20th July 1944  in Italy aged 39. He had been born in Mordington and was the son of Andrew and Mary Lowrie of Berwick upon Tweed and the wife of Agnes Lowrie of “Clairvale”, Paxton.  He is buried in Assisi War Cemetery, Assisi, Italy and  was the father of Neil and Drew  Lowrie of Paxton.  He had been employed as a gardener at Clifton Park, Linton, Roxburgshire before becoming a chaffeur to Colonel Home of Bassendean House, Westruther. He was part of a Light Aid Detachment attached to the 2nd Lothian and Border Horse Regiment in the 6th Armoured Division when on 18th July 1944 they were tasked to cross the River Arno and capture the village of Laterina. The crossing and capture were both fiercely contested by the Germans  and it was here that Craftsman Lowrie was seriously wounded. He is also commemorated on the Westruther and Jedburgh War Memorials. His Headstone is inscribed ” He Died That We Might Live”.
