Private William Ovens

Private William Mitchell Hume Ovens, 818 th Motor Transport Company, Army Service Corps. He died on Service in Persia, aged 33, on 26th November 1919. He was the husband of Elspeth Ovens of Stow and is buried in Teheran War Cemetery, Teheran, Persia. He was born in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire in 1888 and was the son of John and Margaret Ovens of Netherhowden, Oxton. He had been employed as a baker’s vanman in Stow before enlisting in 1915 and being posted to Mesapotamia where he died from pneumonia, His Headstone is inscribed ” Thy Will Be Done”.
